On June 19, a volunteer cleanup drive was successfully conducted in Agunukolapelessa to commemorate World Environment Day, as part of the nationwide Clean Sri Lanka campaign. The initiative was spearheaded by the Divisional Secretariat in collaboration with the Agunukolapelessa Pradeshiya Sabha, local Secretariat office, Police Department, Public Health Inspectors, Mahaweli Authority, and the Agunukolapelessa Traders’ Association.
The event saw active participation from several local volunteer organizations, with additional support provided by Caritas SED Galle under its environmental conservation project. Members of community-based organizations affiliated with Caritas also joined the effort, contributing significantly to the success and outreach of the campaign.
Volunteers focused on cleaning seven major public areas, including the township, bus terminus, public market, sports ground, cemetery, the village tank, and its surrounding buffer zone. The collective effort not only improved the local environment but also promoted community awareness and responsibility toward sustainable practices.
