Warakapitiya, Welipitiya — November 18, 2025
A comprehensive Nutrition Training Program for Mothers and a Pre-School Feeding Initiative utilizing produce from local smallholder farmers were successfully conducted at Sigithi Pre-School, Warakapitiya. The program was organized under the Food Security Project of Caritas SED Galle, with active participation from Warakapitiya CBO members, the Field Officer, and community volunteers.
The training session was led by Dr. Gayani Malkanthi, Ayurveda Medical Officer, together with Mrs. Ushani from the Agricultural Research & Production Assistant (AR&PA) division. The program focused on enhancing mothers’ knowledge on balanced nutrition, child health, and the importance of incorporating locally available, nutrient-rich food into daily meals.
As part of the initiative, the Pre-School Feeding Program showcased how food sourced from smallholder farmers in the community can support both child nutrition and farmer income. The activity encouraged the use of fresh, chemical-free produce to ensure healthier meals for young children.
Warakapitiya CBO members played a key role in organizing and supporting the event, highlighting community unity and participation. Organizers emphasized that improving early childhood nutrition is essential for long-term health, growth, and learning capacity.
Caritas SED Galle reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening food security and community wellbeing through continuous awareness programs, nutrition initiatives, and support for local farming systems.
