Welipitiya — A practical training programme on organic fertilizer production was successfully conducted for farmers of the Udukawa Siriliya Community-Based Organization (CBO) as part of the ongoing Food Security Project implemented by Caritas SED Galle.
The session was facilitated by Mr. Indika Priyadarshana and Mrs. Nanayakkara, with the support of the Field Officer and volunteers working closely with local farming communities. The programme aimed to introduce sustainable, cost-effective fertilizer production methods to help farmers reduce dependency on chemical inputs while improving soil health and crop productivity.
During the training, farmers learned hands-on techniques for preparing organic compost, the benefits of natural soil enrichment, and best practices for maintaining environmentally friendly agricultural systems. Participants also engaged in discussions on how organic farming can strengthen household food security and reduce farming expenses.
Organizers highlighted that initiatives like this not only promote sustainable agriculture but also empower rural communities with practical knowledge that contributes to long-term economic resilience. Caritas SED Galle reaffirmed its commitment to supporting farming families through continued training, awareness programs, and community-based development activities.
