Caritas Sri Lanka has raised funds from CAFOD, CI and other Partners in order to assist people who have been affected due to the present economic crisis in Sri Lanka.

In implementing this CSL DRR Plan we have worked in collaboration with Divisional Secretaries of various DS Divisions in the District of Galle, Matara and Hambantota, other Government officials including GNs, Economic Development Officers, Samurdhi Development Officers, officers of the Department of Agrarian Services, Transparency International, CODESEP, CBO members etc.

Caritas SED Galle staff under the guidance of Rev Fr Director Lasantha Fonseka were able to Implement this programme in a successfully manner in midst of various challenges such as inflation with increased prices of food and commodities including gas, fuel, travel expenses, elderly and sick persons finding difficulty to buy essential medicine at enhanced prices, deterioration of Government welfare measures. climate change (heavy rains, floods, strong winds and landslides) etc.

Caritas SED Galle have also conducted a Psychosocial Counseling Programme under this CSL DRR Plan for Parents, teachers and School children totaling to 200 participants. Education of children has been disrupted for over one and half year because of the closure of schools by the Ministry of Education due to the spread of the 3rd Wave of the COVID -19 epidemic. In today’s economic crisis too the educational activities of the children have been disrupted. This condition can have serious psychological consequences, especially for children and parents. The parents are unable to meet the current expenses in education due to the increased prices of exercise books/text books, school bags, travel expenses etc. In such an environment, the good relationship between the children and the parents has disrupted creating a powerful social problem. The online methodology has further increased the stress created in the children. This stress is not limited to children but is built up in parents as well as teachers. In this context, a complex situation has been created within the entire education system.
